Founded in 2003, Tenuta i Gelsi was created to elevate a family’s viticultural heritage in one of Basilicata’s most striking landscapes, taking its name from the centuries-old mulberry trees lining the estate’s entrance, once grown to feed silkworms in the 1960s. Set in Rionero in Vulture in the province of Potenza, in the Monticchio Bagni area near the volcanic Laghi di Monticchio and the springs that give rise to prized mineral waters, the estate looks out over the Ofanto Valley at about 450 meters above sea level. Here, Ruggiero Potito and his family built a purpose around honoring an ancient viticulture, trusting the land’s dark colluvial soils shaped by Pleistocene volcanic deposits of pyroclastites and lavas mixed with clay-sandy sediments. Their philosophy is rooted in identity and patience, describing their bond with the area’s signature grape, Aglianico del Vulture, as something that begins rough and reserved yet reveals sweetness and delicacy with time. In a territory framed by Mount Vulture, a dormant volcano whose many eruption eras created distinct soils and calderas, Tenuta i Gelsi’s approach is to let place, geology, and careful vineyard stewardship define the character of what they produce.
