Deltetto
Roero, Piemonte, Italy

From the steep Roero hills of the I Lioni, the Deltetto story begins in the late 19th century and takes root in 1953, when Carlo Deltetto and his wife Catterina founded the winery in Canale, guided by an idea of ethical, responsible farming that still frames the family’s work today. In 1977, Antonio Deltetto, newly graduated from the Umberto I oenological school in Alba, reshaped both vineyard and cellar practices with a quality-first mindset and a passion for Classic Method sparkling wines, a focus that later climbed to the high hills of Roddino. Set in a landscape beyond the left bank of the Tanaro river, where ancient marine sands and the Roero’s dramatic Rocche tell stories of land emerging from the sea, the estate aims for the purest, most typical expression of each variety by matching grape and soil and letting each vineyard and vintage speak in its own voice. Their technique follows that philosophy with close, hands-on control from vineyard selection through cellar decisions, including hand harvesting under a family member’s supervision and careful monitoring of steps like lees ageing and disgorgement for their Classic Method wines. Certified organic since 2017, the family today, including Carlo Deltetto Jr., Cristina Deltetto, Claudia Deltetto, and their mother Graziella Deltetto, carries forward a practical sustainability: cover crops and green manure, composting with local manure and grape residues, copper-and-sulphur-only protection, Pied de Cuve to cut sulphur use, minimal filtration choices, naturally produced CO2 for protection during transfers, photovoltaic energy, recycled packaging, and simple hot water and steam cleaning in the cellar.
